In the animation, the City bears witness, a place where layers of humanity are documented in the built fabric of its streets. Encircling the City is the River, a rippling surface obscuring depths of civilisation. The River is a border between the physical world and an intangible realm, a land of possibility, of lives lived, of lives to come.

The animation combines frame-by-frame charcoal drawing with sophisticated digital manipulation. Inspired by London, it pays homage to Fritz Lang’s 1927 film Metropolis, a masterful portrait of the city as a place where technology meets humanity. In particular, the sound design samples the film’s orchestral score by Gottfried Huppertz.
